Early life and business

Obi was born in Onitsha and graduated in Philosophy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1984. He worked as a banker and businessman before full-time politics. In 2021 the Pandora Papers reported that he was linked to offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands and Barbados; he said the money came from his business career and that he broke no laws, and the EFCC invited him for questioning in October 2021. After the 2015 election, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Governor of Anambra State

Obi ran under APGA in 2003 and lost to Chris Ngige, but a court later annulled that result and declared him the winner, and he took office on 17 March 2006. The state assembly impeached him on 2 November 2006; he said the process was unlawful, and a court ruling restored him to office in 2007. He was re-elected in 2010 and served until March 2014, when Willie Obiano succeeded him. Sources differ on some of these dates by a few days.

In 2019 he was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate on the PDP ticket, which finished second to Muhammadu Buhari. In 2022 he left the PDP for the Labour Party. In the 2023 presidential election, INEC declared Bola Tinubu the winner with about 8.79 million votes; Atiku received 6.98 million and Obi 6.1 million, placing third.
