From trader to power broker in Lagos
Efunroye moved to Lagos, then a busy port town, and built wealth through trade. Historians describe her as a shrewd businesswoman who also played a part in the wider commerce of the era, which included the trade in people before and during its suppression. She supported Akitoye, a claimant to the Lagos throne, in his struggle against Kosoko, and her influence grew when Akitoye returned to power in the early 1850s with British backing.

Conflict, exile and return to Abeokuta
Her power brought rivalry. By the mid-1850s she had fallen out with the rulers of Lagos and the British consul, and she was expelled from the city around 1856. She went back to Abeokuta, where she built a new base in trade and politics and remained a major figure.
Iyalode of Egbaland
In Abeokuta she took the title of Iyalode, the leader of women, in the 1860s. The Iyalode sits among the chiefs and speaks for women and traders. Read more in our guide to the Iyalode title and famous Iyalodes and the history of the Egba and Abeokuta.
