The Iyalode is one of the most respected titles for women in Yoruba society. Held by the leader of a town’s women, it carries political, economic and social authority. The word is back in conversation because of online stories honouring women with the title. This guide explains what an Iyalode is, where the title comes from and who the famous holders were.

What Does Iyalode Mean?

The title Ìyálóde is usually explained as the “mother of the outer (public) sphere”, the woman who speaks for women in public life. Traditionally she was chosen from among successful and respected women, often traders, and sat with the king’s chiefs to represent women’s interests, especially in markets, disputes and community matters.

Famous Iyalodes in Yoruba History

  • Efunsetan Aniwura: the Iyalode of Ibadan, a wealthy trader and farmer who became one of the most powerful women of the nineteenth century. She died in 1874.
  • Madam Efunroye Tinubu: a trader and political figure in Lagos and Abeokuta, remembered as Iyalode of Egbaland.

Women, Markets and Power

Yoruba women have long been leaders in trade, and market associations often have their own leaders who work with the Iyalode. The tradition of strong women leaders also shows in the activism of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and the Abeokuta Women’s Union. The Iyalode sits in a wider system of kingship and titles, explained in Yoruba kings and Obas.

The Title Today

Today the title is also given to women of achievement in communities and cultural organisations, and it appears in popular culture. See how the word went viral in our story of the little girl in Yoruba dress honoured as “Iyalode” online. Women often wear aso ebi and gele when receiving such honours.
