Yoruba society has one of Africa’s most enduring systems of kingship. A traditional ruler is called an Oba, and the most senior Yoruba kings carry titles that are known across the world. This guide explains who the main Obas are, what role they play and where their authority comes from.

Where Yoruba Kingship Comes From
Many Yoruba royal houses trace their descent to Oduduwa and the city of Ile-Ife. Kings wear beaded crowns (adé) as symbols of that authority, and are treated as sacred figures who connect the people to their ancestors. Read the background in our guide to the origin of the Yoruba.
The Major Yoruba Obas
- Ooni of Ife: ruler of Ile-Ife and widely regarded as the spiritual head of the Yoruba. See our coverage of the Olojo Festival.
- Alaafin of Oyo: ruler of Oyo, once head of the great empire. Read about the Oyo Empire and the Alaafin’s mobilisation for Oyo Empire Day in Benin.
- Awujale of Ijebuland: ruler of the Ijebu people, based in Ijebu-Ode.
- Alake of Egbaland: ruler of the Egba people in Abeokuta.
- Olubadan of Ibadan: head of Ibadan, a title that passes through a rotating line of seniority.
- Oba of Lagos: traditional ruler of Lagos (Eko).
- Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Deji of Akure, Osemawe of Ondo and Olowo of Owo: senior Obas of other Yoruba regions.

What Do Obas Do Today?
Modern Obas do not hold executive political power, but they remain respected custodians of culture. They lead festivals, settle disputes through customary law, preside over chieftaincy titles and speak for their communities. Many also reach out to the diaspora, as shown by the Alaafin’s call to reconnect with tradition.
How Are Obas Chosen?
Practices differ from town to town. In general, a king is chosen from eligible royal families by kingmakers, often with guidance from Ifá divination, and then installed through ceremonies. Learn about the role of divination in what is Ifá.
