Herbert Macaulay (1864 to 1946) is widely called the father of Nigerian nationalism. A Lagos-born engineer, surveyor and campaigner, he challenged colonial rule decades before independence and helped create Nigeria’s first political parties. This guide covers his life, his main achievements and why he remains a major figure in Yoruba and Nigerian history.
Early Life and Family
Herbert Samuel Heelas Badmus Macaulay was born in Lagos in 1864. His mother was a daughter of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the pioneering Yoruba churchman, so his family was part of Lagos’s educated Christian elite; read about Crowther in famous Yoruba people. He studied in Lagos and trained as a civil engineer and surveyor in England before returning home.
Challenging Colonial Rule
Macaulay became known for campaigning against unfair taxes, land seizures and colonial decisions. He supported the traditional rulers of Lagos, including during the dispute over the removal of the Eleko, and used newspapers and public meetings to rally opinion. The Nigerian National Democratic Party
In 1923 he founded the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP), widely described as Nigeria’s first political party, after the colonial government introduced limited elections for Lagos seats. The party dominated Lagos politics for years. Later, in 1944, he became the first president of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), working with younger leaders, including Nnamdi Azikiwe.
Legacy
Macaulay died in 1946, before independence. His name is remembered in Lagos, and his work paved the way for later leaders such as Obafemi Awolowo and activists such as Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. His story is part of the wider Yoruba history in Yoruba states and their capitals. For a full timeline, see Wikipedia’s Herbert Macaulay page.
