Ọ̀rúnmìlà is the Yoruba divinity of wisdom, knowledge and divination, and the patron of the Ifá system. Yoruba tradition honours him as the one who witnessed human destinies being chosen before birth, which is why he is called upon to help people understand their path. This guide explains who he is, what he represents and how he is honoured.

Who Is Ọ̀rúnmìlà?
In Yoruba thought, Ọ̀rúnmìlà is closely linked with the Creator, Olódùmarè. He is often called Ẹlẹ́rìí Ìpín, the “witness of destiny”, and Ìbìkejì Ọlọ́run, one who stands next to God. Tradition teaches that he was present when each soul chose its destiny, so his knowledge guides people who want to understand their lives. See the wider belief system in Yoruba religion explained.
Ọ̀rúnmìlà and Ifá
Ọ̀rúnmìlà is the source of Ifá’s wisdom, which is carried in verses that are recited by trained priests, the Babaláwo. The system of 256 signs is explained in what is Ifá and in the 16 principal Odù. The divination tools, such as palm nuts and a divining chain, are treated as sacred.

Destiny, Orí and Choice
A central idea is that each person’s orí (inner head) holds their destiny, and that character and effort shape how it unfolds. Ifá does not teach fate alone: sacrifices, good conduct and wise decisions are part of living well. These ideas appear in the values described in Yoruba culture.
How Ọ̀rúnmìlà Is Honoured
- Consultations: a Babaláwo consults Ifá for guidance on life events, such as naming a child. See the naming ceremony.
- Festivals and rituals: Ifá festivals are held in many Yoruba towns.
- Praise and chants: devotees recite verses and praise names; see oríkì.
